The Impact of CIE on the Lives of People with IDD: A Mixed-Methods Intervention Development Study Across Multiple Businesses

Research by Virginia Commonwealth University

Purpose

Two chefs working a kitchen

This study will Identify competitive integrated employment (CIE) aspects that enhance quality of life in employees with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD).

Overview

VCU will conduct an Intervention Development study to examine the comprehensive and longitudinal effect of CIE on the lives of people with IDD related to quality-of-life (QOL). The World Health Organization (2024) defines QOL as "an individual's perceptions in the context of the culture and value systems in which they live and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards, and concerns." Researchers have expansively used this definition to study QOL from a bio-psychosocial model encompassing physical and psychological health, social relationships, and environmental contexts (Mamman et al., 2023). In this study, we will use this bio-psychosocial model to conduct in-depth analyses examining the impact of CIE on 4-specific QOL domains and overall QOL, and to determine what characteristics of employees with IDD and their employment experiences contribute to changes.
